Timber Construction Terminology

Tables on the use of timber construction terminology, compiling explanations of key concepts in the field and their equivalents in Estonian, English, Finnish, and German. The work focuses on general terms, wood and wood-based materials, connections, and fire resistance. The aim of the material is to support clear professional communication and the consistent use of agreed terminology in timber construction, both in Estonia and in international cooperation.

The project, supported in 2025 under the Estonian Language Institute’s terminology grant scheme and led by the Estonian Association of Civil Engineers, also involved Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) and the Estonian Woodhouse Association as members of the working group. The working group sees a clear need for a follow-up project, as the terminology used in the field of timber construction is considerably more extensive.

Working group members: Riho Oras, Alar Just, Eero Tuhkanen, Triinu Poltimäe, Karl Õiger, Elar Vilt.
