Machined CLT Log Buildings in the Turku Archipelago
The holiday cabin complex created by Estonian Log Cabins OÜ in the Turku Archipelago is an excellent example of how architecture can seamlessly merge with the natural landscape. The concept is based on the idea that the buildings should not dominate the environment but instead form a harmonious part of the rugged yet captivating coastal scenery. The blackened timber façades and low, broken rooflines create a visual connection with the surrounding rocky cliffs, forest and sea.
The complex consists of seven independent buildings designed for family and friends to enjoy time together, offering comfort, privacy and a direct connection with nature. Each building is positioned to maximise views and ensure privacy while bringing natural light and seaside vistas deep into the interior.
The main structures are built from 202 mm machined CLT logs, supported by stainless steel piles anchored directly into the bedrock — a solution that ensures stability and long-term durability even in the harsh, saline coastal climate.
Thermo-treated pine is used on façades and terraces, blending perfectly with the seaside environment and requiring minimal maintenance. The windows and doors feature weather-resistant wood–aluminium frames with triple glazing, ensuring high energy efficiency and durability.
Natural wood surfaces, minimalist forms and warm Nordic tones dominate the interior. Hidden electrical systems integrated into the log walls, discreet LED lighting and a combination of natural and mechanical ventilation create a cohesive and contemporary living environment.
The water and wastewater systems operate locally and automatically: water is supplied from a private borehole, and wastewater is treated via a modern bio-purification system. Heating is provided by a high-quality fireplace complemented by electric radiators, ensuring comfort even in colder seasons.
Thanks to extensive factory prefabrication, the entire complex was erected in just 70 days, meeting Finland’s stringent standards for fire safety and acoustic performance.
The result is an architectural ensemble in perfect harmony with nature — where wood, light and silence create an ideal setting for relaxation in the heart of the Turku Archipelago.
